Wildlife statues caught in six-pack protest

Wildlife statues caught in six-pack protest

Wildlife statues in downtown Vancouver were hijacked recently in an environmental protest.

A giant plastic six-pack ring strangled a pair of bronze porpoises in front of the Scotiabank building to protest the impact of throwaway plastics on marine life.

The stunt was an initiative of the Plastic Pollution Coalition in collaboration with Rethink. Patches of plastic pollution currently cover millions of square miles of ocean in the North Pacific and North Atlantic oceans. The plastic is ingested by marine life and moves up the food chain; plastic particles currently show up in newborn infants.

The six-pack ring was originally "caught" on a wildlife statue in front of the Terasen building at Georgia and Thurlow, but had to be moved after the building manager threatened to cut it down.

The whale statue in front of the Vancouver Aquarium and the Girl in a Wetsuit in Stanley Park were also caught in the six-pack protest.
