The Dogwood Initiative is a Canadian sustainable land reform organization that opposes oil tanker traffic along British Columbia’s northern coast. A proposal for an oil pipeline from Northern Alberta to Kitimat threatens to bring hundreds of oil tankers to the coast. Because we didn’t have a budget for paid media, we created a brand new medium using something that passes through every Canadian’s hands every day: the one-dollar loonie coin. We created clear electro-static stickers that, when placed over the coin, make the loon and the water surrounding it appear to be covered in black oil. Reversed out of the black is our notankers.ca website address.
The Dogwood Initiative is a leading land-reform organization in BC whose goal is to make BC the global model for sustainable land reform. Since their launch in 1999 they have mobilized thousands of British Columbians around sustainable land reform issues. Their current initiative, NoTankers, aims to stop oil tanker traffic from entering BC’s fragile coastal waters.
